I like the analogy about hunting. Most of the time, my work is done in the silence of my home office, with the only sound the rat-tat-tat-ing of my keyboard. On a good day.

The latest news out here in western Colorado (where I live) is of a hunter who shot a deer over the weekend. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a stag, who rose up and gored the man, who was later airlifted to the local hospital. The hospital has not released details on his condition.

And I mention this because occasionally, my writing does the same thing to me, i.e., just when I think I've got it within my sight, it rises up and smacks me in the face to remind me of who's really on control.

Cheers,
Marjorie

Not dark, but very truthful. Sometimes when you're slogging away and the words won't come, it feels like you're the only person on the planet. But you're right. When it's going well, there's a definite feeling of euphoria. (And when it's middling, you (one) do(es) still have that sense of wellbeing. until the revision, anyway!
Great quote!

I don't think it sounds dark at all! I think it's a great encapsulation of the ups and downs of the entire process.

Thought about this after I posted it, and it does sound a bit bleak, doesn't it?

Actually, there are some afternoons when the writing is sort of middling... not exactly perfect, but with potential. And the process is middling too. Not exactly earthshaking but definitely warm and rewarding in a quiet sort of way.
