I’m gutting my story right now.
Hope everyone else is doing better than me.
October 28th, 2007 at 12:34 am
Hi All,
The past few days have been up and down for me but at least I’m making progress. Did another 2,330 for the four days down on what I had been aiming for but better then nothing. I’m up to 24,470 for the book so almost half way there. YEH.
I’m putting ‘Back To You’ aside now until after NaNo, I’ll spend the next three days just making sure I have all my character profile organized and my life outside of this sorted.
Hope everyone else is doing well. Catch ya later.
October 28th, 2007 at 12:44 am
I’m at 7,500 on my WIP and I hate it all. *sigh* I’ll be glad when I hit my stride and start liking it.
I tweaked an old prologue this week and made it into a stand-along flash fiction story. I submitted it to Flashes of Speculation, so we’ll see how that goes.
I’ve also started a couple of new stories– one for the next AW flash fiction carnival and one as a Halloween story to post on my blog for fun.
October 28th, 2007 at 2:27 am
The Friday Flash Fiction is going well - I did another this week and set up an autolinking meme so others can join me (and they have).
I’m at the Emerald City Writers Conference so no new writing in a couple of days but I stand at:
Actual words written: 10,815
Goal words: 9,750
% of Goal: 111%
October 28th, 2007 at 3:10 am
Thought about it, took a math test, reread two of my WsIP, no words. I do have a funny story up on my blog. Leave a comment if you check it out, my daughter told me to tell her what anybody says.
October 28th, 2007 at 3:16 am
Hmm…I’ve missed all the check-ins to this point which irritates the living daylights out of me. I just remembered as I was thinking about the original goals I’d set. *snort* Well as it happens, I began a new story from the ashes of others which weren’t working…for anything.
So I’ve a new story, a new goal, and no clue as to how it’ll turn out.
Tentative Title: Running For Safety
Hero: Marikos - sixteen yrs. old.
Heroine: Amity - fourteen yrs old.
Genre: Fantasy Young Adult (and might turn into an epic depends on how long the outline goes)
Setting: In progress. World in which some shifters: dragons, big felines, other watery types, and avians are dying from inbreeding.
Current Word Count: 28,589k at this point.
Goal Word Count: 70-90k when the outline is fleshed into a full story. 70k after its edited and polished…maybe. Its too early to tell.
October 28th, 2007 at 3:24 am
Hopeless! I had a work conference to go to and found I can’t write in a strange room in a strange city. Totally threw out my routine. Now I have to write a job application, but if I can get that out of the way by Tuesday I’ll get back into the swing of my wip.
October 28th, 2007 at 4:21 am
I’m at almost 14k for the two weeks.
That’s seen me finish up two novellas (and sub them) and complete the first chapter of another novella.
And tomorrow the monsters go back to school/pre-school after half-term… Yay!
Kim
October 28th, 2007 at 4:29 am
My total for the two weeks is 16.5K and I’m maintaining an average count of 1.2K per day… which is pretty remarkable for *me*! I’ve had some pretty good tallies in the last week, but I’m at a tough spot in my WIP at the moment, so I expect it to be a fight to reach 1K per day during the next few days… But once I get back into my stride, I hope to speed up again!
October 28th, 2007 at 4:52 am
Blech blech blech!!!!
I have two WIPs that are just not cooperating, so the last few days I’ve written a stupendously pathetic 413 words.
I’ll get there, i know… it just doesn’t seem like it right now.
October 28th, 2007 at 5:06 am
I had to stop yesterday and do a plot map to decide where to go next. I’m so glad I did. I know exactly where to begin this morning!
October 28th, 2007 at 5:31 am
Not such a good week, but still forward progress….so that is a plus.
Total for week 2 - 943 words
Progressive total - 2500 words even
I will keep plugging away…health issues have been zapping the energy, but I hope to get a burst soon so I can hit the floor running
October 28th, 2007 at 6:15 am
…..i did some! it was only 517 words though =( university assignments and things are getting in the way too much, may not get anywhere which is very disappointing.
October 28th, 2007 at 6:44 am
I have my story all worked out and ready to go. I even wrote up a blurb that makes me really happy. Now I’m going to concentrate on hammering out the world and other setting details until next check in.
October 28th, 2007 at 7:13 am
Not doing too good either, I’m sort of revising because I’m stuck and I’ve discovered the one I’m working on is lacking a goal. Motivation is there, Conflict is there, but no clear goal I think. Arrgh.
October 28th, 2007 at 7:27 am
Nothing too impressive since Wednesday, but I did finish small project #1, now I’m onto big project #1.
The first one, I finished Wednesday or Thursday @ 49K. Main project, Share and Share Alike is already @ 31k. I’ve only been editing and skimming the past few days so it’s sitting right under 32k.
October 28th, 2007 at 9:09 am
This week finished great! I spent three days working on galleys for a book, but then dove into my book and did 8000 words this week, so I’m stoked to finally be writing again after two weeks of having to work revisions for one book and galleys for another. I do NOT multitask well *g*
October 28th, 2007 at 9:18 am
ACK, got a little behind. I had edits on two books from two publishers so it threw me off track. Still working on one, but turned one in this morning. I have to add several thousand to one book, so I am upping my sweating total to 100K so I do get some credit for all that writing, lol.
Today I plan on doing a little new writing on my second project, the novella.
October 28th, 2007 at 9:33 am
I’ve moved beyond my pathetic first check-in of 283 words. I’ve added 7995 words, for a total of 8278. That’s an avg of 920/day, which is not far from my goal of 1000/day. I blogged it out this morning. I’m smiling today. Next check-in, I’ll be showing a dimple!
October 28th, 2007 at 9:38 am
I spent the majority of the last two weeks plotting and then started a new wip. Started a new job so that didn’t help. But even if I am unable to actually get to my computer, I am writing and taking notes in my notebook. I hope to get a chance to actually pluging what I have written. So I am at least doing somthing with my writing everyday and that is good.
October 28th, 2007 at 9:53 am
this week - 1481
the challange - 3438
October 28th, 2007 at 10:12 am
I’ve added 6,220 words this week, since the Sweat I’ve added 14,876. Making my total word count 19,141. If I can keep this pace up I can be done before Christmas.
For those that this applies: Stop beating yourselves up. Just makes this weeks goal to PUT BUTT IN CHAIR.
October 28th, 2007 at 10:17 am
Still tweaking the new outline. I should be ready to start writing on the first draft on Monday or Tuesday, methinks.
October 28th, 2007 at 10:28 am
I’ve done a whole lot of nothing. Check out my blog and you’ll see why. Besides, don’t writers get some time off every now and then?
October 28th, 2007 at 10:33 am
1200 on Thurs, 1200 on Friday and 800 yesterday for a total of 3 K since Wed and roughly 13 K so far for the challenge. Hoping for a great week this week!
October 28th, 2007 at 10:40 am
This is not going well for me. I am indecisive on my plotting, coming down with a cold, and having motivation problems. I am attempting to write a small scene each night, then hope to piece them together toward the end.
October 28th, 2007 at 11:04 am
I’ve put in about 500 words since the last check in. Not sure what’s up but I feel like I’ve hit a wall. Not sure if it’s story or me. The weather here has turned and I’m very sensitive to that sort of thing. I did pick up a couple research books at the library, one I skimmed through and realized it was a waste the other I haven’t opened yet. I think I’ll spend part of today reading that so I can get a better handle on my heroine’s family history.
October 28th, 2007 at 11:09 am
Well…some days my total is more than I’d hoped for, other days it’s less than ideal. But the fact that I’ve actually written each day surpasses all of my expectations. I feel good about my progress.
October 28th, 2007 at 11:22 am
Sandy… If you’re writing a small scene each night, that’s progress! Hang on in there…
October 28th, 2007 at 11:35 am
Well this week has ended up much better than the first one. I wrote a total of 13k and I’m almost finished with my novella that’s due to the editor the first week in November. I’m determined to get all of my projects done during Sven (my list is long but I know I can do it), so back to writing!
Keep sweatin’ everyone!
October 28th, 2007 at 11:49 am
I revised one more chapter of my rough draft, which isn’t very much, but I’ve been in high gear brainstorming for my NaNo novel and I’m getting ready and rarin’ to go to start writing it when 12:00 a.m., Nov. 1 rolls around…
October 28th, 2007 at 11:51 am
3392
October 28th, 2007 at 11:55 am
1380 - so total of 7198
October 28th, 2007 at 12:08 pm
I got the first draft of my novella done (20K) and I did two 2K shorts. I’m gonna go through my novella today and add a scene. Tomorrow I hope to start on my next project, a vamp novella.
October 28th, 2007 at 12:11 pm
I wasn’t able to write this weekend. Friday, I put down 850 words. My total is up to 8300 now. Not too shabby.
October 28th, 2007 at 12:48 pm
My Sven total is up to 16,716 not counting any new words today. I plan on spending the day worldbuilding/plotting my NaNo project.
October 28th, 2007 at 12:54 pm
[…] Sven’s Challenge is still going pretty well. I checked in already today and gave my word count. I’ve done 24000 words so far which is pretty incredible for me. If you haven’t checked in yet, go here. […]
October 28th, 2007 at 1:06 pm
Still doing pretty well. Was unable to do any writing yesterday but since Sven started have 21,831 words for both NaNo project and novella.
October 28th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
Not where I’d like to be. Only at just over 5,000 total. Had a block for a couple days, but I think I found a way around it today.
October 28th, 2007 at 1:42 pm
Since the start of the challenge I finished up project number one, editng a novella and completing it, added about 10K in the end. I’m currently working on revisions. I’m calling that project number two, and it’s going pretty well. Good luck to everyone for the week ahead!
October 28th, 2007 at 2:44 pm
Still working on finishing up my novella before Nov. 1 when NaNo starts. Also, working on an outline for NaNo. Don’t know my exact word count, but I do know it’s not where I want it to be. Working on reaching my goals.
October 28th, 2007 at 2:54 pm
Had health and work issues but managed to YAY! finally outline a plot for wip2. I stalled on wip 1 because I had an inconsistent tone on an important scene. I’m back to it today. Regardless of other issues, I am managing to write every day. Another busy work week coming up but I plan to spend the rest of today writing. Head down, words on the page writing. This challenge is keeping me on it.
October 28th, 2007 at 2:58 pm
I’m at about 12K total so far
October 28th, 2007 at 3:32 pm
took a day off from the theatre to do other things but still have only managed a weak 1000 more words today. Hopefully since i still have a half a day, I’ll do better by the end of the night
October 28th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
Not too good the last half of the week, but I’ve been at my chapter retreat in the mountains of TN since Friday. I have some catching up to do this week. Still, the retreat was fun. Linda Howard glared at me most of last night and Kelley St. John nearly got me killed. Thankfully, this isn’t a regular occurrence — we were playing a murder mystery game.
October 28th, 2007 at 4:55 pm
It’s been a crazy busy week. I haven’t made my words for the day today (of course the day isn’t over–I can be an optimist), but I did make my words for the week (7560) and my words for the day every OTHER day this week.
October 28th, 2007 at 5:52 pm
Progress has slowed considerably, due to major alterations, but I like them so its worth it — page count - 62.
October 28th, 2007 at 6:37 pm
I’m not starting word count until Nov. 1, so I’m not stressed…
Yet.
October 28th, 2007 at 7:35 pm
Truly appalling week for me. Family visits meant I’ve managed a measly 2K for the entire week. I figure I’m gonna have to pull double shifts next week to make up for it.
Meanwhile, I’ve at least settled on what I’m writing.
October 28th, 2007 at 7:58 pm
My wife and I have been dealing with water in our apartment this weekend, and all of the headache that goes with having to interact with apartment management people, so needless to say I haven’t written anything in the last two days.
October 28th, 2007 at 8:29 pm
So far my total word count is 4,110. I’m struggling, and I’m not sure why. I need to push through my barrier and get some serious words down.
October 28th, 2007 at 8:31 pm
Nano on Thursday. I think I’m really for Thursday. And possibly Friday. But Saturday and Sunday concern me…
October 28th, 2007 at 8:31 pm
Nano on Thursday. I think I’m ready for Thursday. And possibly Friday. But Saturday and Sunday concern me…
October 28th, 2007 at 8:31 pm
Around 3,000 words and 23 pages edited.
Hope everyone has had a great weekend!!
October 28th, 2007 at 8:47 pm
I got a rejection letter on Friday. It was a positive rejection, i.e., not interested but contained compliments and critique. I know this is a very good thing, but it was still hard not to take it hard. Saturday, my word count was 400. I gave up, went out and had a nice day with my husband. Today I woke up in a better frame of mind and whipped out 1601 words. And by whipped out, I mean written over three sessions during the day. For me, that’s whipped cream!
My total word count between Thursday and today is 3801. A little more than half of what I hoped but I’m back on track and that’s what counts.
October 28th, 2007 at 8:55 pm
I’ve written 3,484 new words since Wednesday. I’m still behind on my word count goals, but am pleased with my progress on these revisions. Only 25% of the novel left to revise. I’m in the home stretch–of this round.
October 28th, 2007 at 9:22 pm
Magic Touch:
Total word count = 10,157
New words written = 0
Double O Blonde
Total word count = 10,716
New words written = 1,818
I’m doing pretty good. Against a goal of 2,000 word per week, I’ve written over twice that since last Sunday. The Double O Blonde story is coming together for me in terms of the characters and the overall plot. And now that band season is over the my son, hopefully my life can get back to its normal level of insanity {laughs}
To those of you struggling, keep the faith. It will get better. Just to remember to write a little bit every day.
To those of you that are rolling with your story, I wish you the best.
Take care……………Wayne
October 28th, 2007 at 9:58 pm
Since Wednesday I’ve written just under 6000 words which I’m very happy about. I’ve not done any work on my main piece since Thursday because a number of more urgent deadlines have popped up however the deadline for my main piece has been moved so it all works out well.
Approximate total for the challenge so far: 15,943
October 28th, 2007 at 10:06 pm
this week= 3791 words
total since beginning of challenge= 6053
total= 43893
I’ve only got a little more to go and then I’m finished my first story, then I can start my next major project! (well, after my school exams anyway)
October 28th, 2007 at 10:21 pm
It’s been a while since I sat down and wrote everyday. I’m doing that, which was the main purpose of this challenge for me. It really threw me into a tailspin when I quit smoking and I’m actually only now getting back into some sort of stride. Gobstoppers help! [mini jaw breaker candies]
Honestly? I think I’ve written about 3000 words this week. I know I’m done with Chapter two and that is a biggie for me. If I didn’t know that I was going to have to report in, I’m not so sure how I would have done. This challenge has really helped. A lot!
So thanks to Sven I’m back in the saddle again.
Thanks,
Michelle
October 28th, 2007 at 10:38 pm
I am now up to 10,817 words: 8,796 of manuscript, 368 of query letter, and 1,653 of synopsis. After many hours of query letter hell where the significant other and I debated each and every word and cut my original hook nearly in half, I finally have a query letter I am confident in. I have one or two more sentences in it that I would like to rework, and I still have to write the personalization for each agent, but I already feel like I’ve accomplished so much. Query letters are a pain.

When it was done I jumped right into writing my synopsis instead of working on more pages. I have to say, I know a lot of people hate writing them, but I’m having a blast. Writing it before hand, in the tone and style I plan to write the book, is really helping me get into the story. I feel like when I’m done with the synopsis I’ll jump right into the story and the pages will fly by because I have such a good sense of where it’s going.
*Happy dance & celebration*
So, yeah, it’s been a great writing week even though I’ve done little in the way of pages. This story feels *right* now.
October 28th, 2007 at 10:41 pm
I didn’t write Tues., Wed., Thurs., or Fri., but yesterday I wrote 1500 and today I wrote 3500 (unfortunately neither word-burst was on the deadline WIP). So 5k for the week. Since my daily goal is 750, think that keeps me on target.
October 28th, 2007 at 10:49 pm
I’ve managed a little over 1000 since the last check in, which puts me at 1919 so far in the challenge. I feel like I’m getting off to a slow start, but hopefully I’ll keep picking up steam.
October 28th, 2007 at 11:08 pm
Barely missing my word count goals, cause I’m sweating for a different reason. I’m watching the Red Sox win the World Series. Woo-hoo. Kinda distracting. Losing sleep. At least I am managing to write some. Thank goodness it’s over. Next week I should really get in gear.
October 28th, 2007 at 11:14 pm
Haven’t written anything since Wednesday…UGH!
October 28th, 2007 at 11:17 pm
I’ve managed about 1k this week, bringing me to a whopping 4000…ish, I didn’t actually count, I just estimated because I’ve been adding a paragraph here, a paragraph there, a snippet of dialogue or description… It’s month end, and halloween and I’ve been sick, and medicated b/c of a back issue, so I think my muse has been napping. etc etc.
I have been productive though. I reworked my myspace, wrote some draft blog entries, and got ahead of things with some work for the day job so I’ll have time to write, and, I’m plotting the story I’m starting for NaNo. If any of you know me you’ll know I’m a panster, so this is big.
October 28th, 2007 at 11:17 pm
Hey all, since Wednesday’s check in I’ve written 2757 words. Not bad considering I ended up not being able to write yesterday as I was at a work related school this weekend. So that’s over 4000 since Monday and I’m pretty darn glad with it, considering there were weeks where I didn’t write four words. Weeks, heck months.
October 28th, 2007 at 11:28 pm
I’ve had a great week. I wrote 5516 since last Wednesday, raising my weekly total to over 11k, Sven total to over 22k.
I finished Primal Encounter and added another of the goal wip into the mix.
October 29th, 2007 at 12:07 am
Total since Wednesday’s check in - 1626
Total for the challenge - 5528
What I WANTED to have done by now - 14,000
Gee, only 8472 words down.
SIGH!!!
October 29th, 2007 at 12:25 am
I’ve only done just over 350 since Wed, but that’s as I thought since I was going to the Emerald City Writer’s Conference (so fun btw!).
Total for the challenge:6,722 and I’m very happy with that!
This week should be better.
October 29th, 2007 at 12:30 am
Total since Wednesday — 6,505 words on “Kiss the Girl Goodbye”
Total for the Week: 11,917 words on “Kiss the Girl Goodbye”
Just over 15,000 total for the challenge.
This is a tremendous improvement over last week, and I feel much better about the where the story is than even just a few days ago. While I think there’s a bunch of stuff that will end up getting cut in revisions. I can see the story starting to take form, in my brain, and that’s always a good thing. I still haven’t figured out why my villain misspells a particular epithet, but at least I know there’s a reason and that it’s going to be revealed at some point.
October 29th, 2007 at 1:14 am
My final update on word count for Running For Safety is: 30,282k. I’m happy with this amount. I’ll be adding more to it as time goes on, I know I will.
October 29th, 2007 at 1:55 am
Behind on my word count goal but still going.
October 29th, 2007 at 2:01 am
Word count since Weds. is a measly 3419. This week should be much better.
October 29th, 2007 at 2:59 am
Uggg I’m late. I’m sick. I didn’t do any writing all weekend, but I did post 6,180 words on my WIP from Wed to Fri, for a total of 27,121 total so far in this challenge. I’ve got the sniffles, feel like dog poop and don’t feel like continuing. We will see what Monday brings. And this is crappy time to get ill because Nano is like starting in a couple of days!!!! Uggg I’m stressed, and I was doing so well…
October 29th, 2007 at 4:07 am
Forgot to update yesterday! Grrrr.
I’m starting to lay the scenes out on cards, just to have a better idea of how many I have and how they mesh with one another (or not). So, more preparation than anything else. But it’s still forward motion so it’s progress!
October 29th, 2007 at 4:24 am
Played at LegoLand all weekend. But fortunate for me I’m in the planning phase, so all the time spent in the car or in long lines was spent trying to figure out a subplot for my NaNo which I think I have and need to fit it into the existing story line. I’ve spent last week on the plot and have 26 scene cards and need about 24 more before Nov 1. Yeah! Then I get to write again.
October 29th, 2007 at 5:53 am
Two week total 24,842 Whew! For me that’s terrific since I have to work full time as well. Back to sweating…
October 29th, 2007 at 6:00 am
I spent the last week in the grip of a migraine. so again i’ve got zero word count to report. I did continue to fiddle with the notes and prep materials for the story I’m planning to do for NaNoWriMo. I thought about it and daydreamed it so much that it began to enter my sleep dreams too. That is a good sign. I’m hoping for better days ahead.
i refuse to resign in shame.
October 29th, 2007 at 6:31 am
the initial momentum is still carrying me along, I’m happy to say. I took Friday off and Sunday was a half-day, given that I didn’t work on the main WiP but was still writing a bit… Thanks for all the inspirational quotes!
October 29th, 2007 at 8:48 am
I took last week off to get ready for inlaws and Halloween parties. But I’m back into the saddle today and ready to write. And I’ll be keeping track of my progress on my blog.
October 29th, 2007 at 9:52 am
I got 3000 good words in yesterday. I’m still behind but that went a long way toward getting me caught up. Today I’m taking all four of my kids to the dentist so I don’t anticipate getting much done but I’m taking my laptop with me in case I find some time to write while I’m out.
Keep up the good work everyone!!
October 29th, 2007 at 10:02 am
Finally getting around to checking in… I made very slow progress (only 3 new pages since Wednesday), but I’m hoping to pick up the pace as this week goes on. Well done, everyone!
October 29th, 2007 at 11:34 am
Mine was supposed to say a cobined total of 4700, ish.
October 29th, 2007 at 11:34 am
cobined? lolol sheesh, my edits are gonna kill me.
October 29th, 2007 at 11:44 am
I took a mini-vacation and got outta town. Instead of feeling guilty for not writing for the last couple of days, I’m re-framing and realizing now I’m re-energized to plunge into pages.
October 29th, 2007 at 12:49 pm
Okay, I’m a slug. Late checking in, and not much to report. Blah!

I was at the Emerald City RWA conference this weekend so I’m late. Plus I picked up the dreaded conference drek (now with added nausea!!). Anyway, I got zero done yesterday. Instead, I slept and read Susan Andersen’s newest and then Rachel Gibson’s newest (and loved them both so very much)
However, I did get 2K done on Saturday and as I’ve been shut off in bed today by order of my husband, I’ve already written nearly 3K more so it’s a good thing. Friday before I left I also got a grand in.
I’m on target and I have my numbers moving upward steadily so it’s all good.

Plugging along. Nothing earth-shaking production-wise, but tons of research, and tons of excitement. I love this book! My current word count is 4,345.
