October 21st - Sunday Check-in

One week into the program . . . how’re we all doing?

  1. Thomma Lyn Says:

I’m rockin’ and rollin’ with my revisions to the rough draft I wrote for the first round of Sweat. Since first check-in, I’ve substantially revised five chapters — can’t really quantify the word count, but it’s been a lot of work, and I’m making progress!

And come November, I’ll be doing NaNo concurrently with Sweat, so I’m happy to say I’ve made progress in brainstorming the new novel-to-be.

  2. SandieH Says:

I missed posting on Wednesday. For some reason it was hard going with this children’s book. I have been doing research on different adventures I want my character to take, but my word count is down. Not to worry, I’ll catch up, anyway I have one Adventure finished, (but needs some revision) and I’ve done a total of 1,500 words.
    Getting there slowly.

  3. Angelle Trieste Says:

Just character sketches and world-building got done. Hope everyone else’s doing better. :)

  4. bunnygirl Says:

I wrote and posted two new short stories and have written 3,739 words on my novel. I haven’t worked on the novel yet for tonight, so the word count should be higher by Sunday morning.

I like my new short stories, but hate what I’ve written on the novel. I have to keep reminding myself that in everything else I’ve ever written, I end up throwing away the first chapter or two, which is more about grounding me than about the actual story.

  5. PortiaDaCosta Says:

Well, so far, so good. I’ve managed to do at least 1K words per day, and my official daily target is 750 words. :)

I’m actually wondering whether to make my official daily target 1K anyway, which is still doable, with the built in ‘extra’ days… should I do that? I know I’ve got some proofs heading my way during the sweat period, possibly two sets, so that’ll take some productive days out of the equation… and I probably need to take some time out to brainstorm, as I need a clearer idea of where this WIP is going. It still seems to be finding it’s direction and tone at the moment…

All in all though, a very satisfactory first week for me! :)

  6. Kim Knox Says:

I’ve written 5k since Wednesday, so from Monday that’s roughly 8k, which is slightly staggering, LOL

The first draft of my No1 Sven wip is complete and I’m putting that away for a week before attempting to edit it. Today I’m throwing myself into the No2 Sven wip. This is the nasty one, that refuses to play nicely and get itself written. I have my fingers crossed for this week. :-)

  7. AJ O'Donovan Says:

Sigh, i’ll get something done eventually..i’ve been busy reading books (one for a buzz campaign one for an assignment and review) and i’ve been at home helping my parents move things in the attic etcetc…lots of excuses, not a lot of writing. I need a kick up the arse really.

  8. Bron Says:

    Averaging 0ver 800 per day. I’m thrilled.

  9. Maura Anderson Says:

I’m at 5254 total so far and 119% of goal. I thought I was behind until I remembered I’d written a 750 word Flash Fiction for Flash Fiction Friday on my blog.

    DOH!

  10. Silke Says:

I’m still just plotting, so I don’t have a wordcount atm.

  11. Liane Says:

I haven’t finished today’s word count yet, but as of last night I was at 6600+ words, six hundred above goal. If all goes well, Kiss of the Cerberus will be done (in first draft form) by November 1. Then I’ll return to either Heart of Stone or Book of Deadiquette for Nano Month.

    Good luck everyone!

  12. Liane Says:

Silke, if you’re reading comments, I wasn’t able to post a comment on your blog (had to register, then didn’t get an email confirming it), soooo….just wanted to say that your artwork is amazing. You are very gifted.

    Liane

  13. Jane Says:

7717 for the week. Yay me! I hoped for 1000 a day, and wanted to finish my novella by the end of this week.
I’ve exceeded (on average) my word count goal, and that included some editing because i got the novella finished on Friday.
This week may be a bit hectic, but I want to try and write, even if it’s very rough getting ideas down sort of stuff.
I need to start planning the WIP i’m working on now. Inspiration only gets me so far, then i need a plan.

  14. Carly Phillips Says:

4,219 - averaging half the number of words a day I need for this challenge - in reality I’m doing close to the challenge words less days and not writing some days. This week needs to be better!

  15. Anna Black Says:

So far I’ve written 10,968 words, since Oct 15th with an average of 1,828 words a day. I’m 50% done with my 30,000 word novella (the one I want to finish the draft of before I start NaNo on 11/1) and I’m coming along pretty good with prepping for my NaNo novel. I’m still writing in the mornings and evenings after work and on the weekends. Which is what I’m about to do once I’ve a completed a few chores. :)

  16. Sandy l Says:

Still trying to feel what works best for me. I didn’t make the word count that I wanted. I hope to make up the word loss this week.

  17. Vernieda Says:

Still haven’t starting drafting but I’ve finally settled on a plot. I’ve been trashing one after another when I discover it just won’t work for the idea I have in mind. But I think I finally have something to pursue. The plan for this week is to flesh out the plot. It looks like I’ll be starting the actual drafting around the same time NaNoWriMo starts too. Totally unintended but I guess it’s a happy coincidence.

  18. Jayne Rylon Says:

This has been a great week for me. I haven’t started writing yet today but in the past week I’ve written 10,083 words. Considering I have a full time career as well, I’m really happy with that. I’ve got a about 10K left in the first WIP I targeted with Sven so I’m hoping to duplicate this week and wrap it up in the coming one.

Thanks everyone for helping keep me motivated. Good luck on meeting your goals!

  19. Matt S Says:

I started with 10,948, and at the end of yesterday I had 14,928, which means I’ve written 3,980 words. That makes my average 663 words per day, which is 87 words below my target. Blah. I did manage to hit/exceed my target (750) 3 days, but the 3 where I missed were pretty sucky.

However, my originally stated goal with this wasn’t about words (though I want them), but about developing better writing habits, and I’m making steps in that direction since I did writing at times other than lunch break at work. So…yay for that.

  20. Sandie Hudson Says:

I’ve added another 1,500 words since Wednesday, not to bad seeing I’ve had the last three days out with family commitments.

So it’s head down and butt in seat for this week as I’d really like to get this one finished before NaNo.

  21. Anna Adams Says:

I’ve added I’m not sure how many words since we started, and revised–I’m not sure how many either. But my first goal was to finish revising a ms. that’s due tomorrow, and I’m going to do that–going well over the 750 words a day I committed too. I’m starting to feel a bit panicked because you never know what’s going to happen the last two days before a ms. is due. ;-) So, I didn’t want to take the time to check in. But oh yeah, I committed to checking in, too! ;-)

I’m really enjoying this, and I needed the accountability. Can’t wait to start on new pages on Tuesday, but this has been a great help in revising!

  22. Mechele Armstrong Says:

So far almost 5K since I started the challenge. I’m writing between 750 to 1500 words a day.

  23. Cora N Says:

I’ve written 1925 words since the challenge began, but I’ve been spending lots of time with just me, a red pen, and my printed manuscript. I’m really pleased with how I’ve been doing revision-wise and it’s been fun.

Good luck to you all! :-)

  24. Ann Says:

I’m doing pretty well so far, I’ve got about 3800 words and have only missed one day (I haven’t done my writing for today yet, that’s next), and that’s the thing I wanted to work on most.
    Good luck to everybody!

  25. Jen P Says:

Oops! That comment from Cora N was actually me (Jen P)!

  26. Ann K Says:

I did fine up until Friday, but although I was exceeding my wordcount, I was still struggling with this manuscript.

A little background: I planned this story in August, began writing in September, got about 40k within two weeks and then crashed. I struggled after that, maybe managing to sit down once a week, and despite having a full and grossly detailed 14k outline, I would flounder on scenes, quit early, and a host of other difficulties.

At the time, I blamed in on the mundane things. Stress at the day job, burn out, whatever.

I signed up for 70 Days in hopes that the lower, long term wordcount goal would help me get back into my groove, but the words I wrote those first days were just as aimless. I knew where the scene was meant to go, but it just wouldn’t get there.

On Saturday, I sat myself down and made myself write down the things I loved about the story, in hopes it would make my enthusiasm return. I got that reminder, but it also it made me realize what was wrong with the story, and why I’d suddenly completely stalled up.

So yesterday and today I’ve been replotting the latter half of the story. I’m excited about it again. I’ve cut 13k from the manuscript, starting where everything went wrong.

My goal is still 40k, but I’m not going to worry about wordcounts this week while I plan, or where my wordcounts officially started. Because “40k” really means “end of the novel” to me.

So, in short? Things are going very, very well. You just couldn’t tell from my wordcount :D

  27. Jo Says:

I’m on target - not counting today, since I haven’t written yet, I’ve added 12,458 words to the wip. I need to continue to add 15 pages per day so I can get the book in on time. Weeee!

I do have to say it’s much easier to keep up with this schedule when there’s a big old giant group of folks all pushing the boulder up the mountain together. So thanks, and go Sweaters!

  28. Emily Ryan-Davis Says:

I feel like this has been a good week for me writing-wise. Not amazing, but good. I don’t have a grand total word count (haven’t bothered) but I’ve gotten 750-850 words for every day this week except for yesterday. I’ll get yesterday’s words today when I get home from work and do today’s words. If that makes sense.

Every-day writing…well. Some days I just can’t do it. I come home from work at 9:30 p.m. with an eyeball-aching headache, or some other complication, and the last thing I want to do is think. I have made a effort to have a writing session for every day of the week, even if it didn’t actually occur on the day in question (example Wednesday night I felt awful. Thursday morning I wrote Weds 750 words, and Thursday night I wrote Thursday’s). It’s working for me to not cut myself any slack for a day’s word goal, even if I have to cut myself slack for the day itself.

Oh, bonus to me: almost all the words this week have gone to my deadline WIP. I’ve really worked instead of copping out and writing on the WIP that I’m still excited about. :)

  29. Saskia Walker Says:

7,622 words done on Sven project number one, plus edits. I have revisions to add into the mix now, so that will be my Sven project number two ;-)

Here’s wishing everyone a good and productive week ahead!

  30. Alexa Silver Says:

14,631 words this week, thanks mostly to yesterday. I sat myself in my desk chair and wrote until my hands ached, ignoring everyone and everything short of immediate needs. Today I’m a bit tired, but am feeling very accomplished. I love a couple of turns the story has taken. It diverged from my synopsis in surprising ways and a sequel has presented itself in a gift box, complete with bow.

After a nap and some time with the wee ones, I’ll dive back in.

  31. Keziah Fenton Says:

My word count has been averaging around the 750 words a day. My goal is to edit/revise/rewrite one ms while plotting the first draft of a second one. I work two jobs six days a week some weeks and only three days on others so I do the best I can around time off, lunches and breaks. If I’m near the computer I work on the first project, otherwise I work on the second. As the two books are connected, I’m finding the back and forth process wonderful for fleshing out my characters.

Angelle, world building is time consuming. You might not have words on the page but that is an important step.

Good luck to everyone. It sounds like your minds are in the write place.

  32. Cynthia Says:

I’m plugging along. I’ve put in almost 4,000 words since the challenge started. Finding the research is causing me more fits than it probably should. I’m also struggling with the character names, they just haven’t properly introduced themselves to me yet, I hope they do so soon.

  33. Ava Rose Johnson Says:

I’ve been hitting my goals. I’ve upped my daily word count to 2000 words and as of last night, I’m at 9k. Woohoo!

  34. Ava Rose Johnson » Blog Archive » Check-In Day Says:

[…] day has arrived! Drop by Sven’s website and spill. Are you meeting your goals? Are you surpassing your […]

  35. PortiaDaCosta Says:

It sounds to me that everyone is doing great after seven-ish days. Whether they’re writing, editing, brainstorming or planning. It’s all writing work really. I’ve been rewriting and layering in stuff today, and have not actually moved forward, even though the wordcount has gone up sufficiently to meet my target. A key aspect of the story ‘felt wrong’ but now seems better… :)

    So I’m happy with that.

  36. Louisa Says:

I have written 4 of the past seven days for a total of 3553 words. This is a completely new novel, and I have no written outline, though I do know generally what is going to happen. So far–and it’s very early days yet–I’m okay with the characters, though I’m surprised that the main character is nothing like I thought the main character for this story would be.

So, we’ll see how it goes as the story unfolds.

I can’t seem to do more than about 800 words before I get really restless and have to quit. Yesterday I quit in the middle of a scene because I just couldn’t stand to type another word. What is that all about? Maybe it’s a keyboard thing, some ergonomic problem. I’m using a notebook computer.

  37. Laura Elliott Says:

On Thursday, I wrote 975 words - a new record for me. Then I kicked its butt and wrote 1883 words on Friday! I finished another chapter, but I have to read through it. I’m not sure if anything is worth keeping.

Weekends are reserved for wedding planning. I started my registry, had yet another conversation about invitations with Mom, and worked on honeymoon research. Anyone have suggestions for Hawaii vacation spots?

  38. Alison Kent Says:

I only wrote pages 3 days out of the last 7, so am sitting at 2260 words. The other days were spent note-taking and brainstorming, and moving between a couple of ideas, so every single day was productive!

  39. Mary Says:

I started on Wednesday, and haven’t written yet today. My goal is one scene a day, or average 750 words. My count for the four days is four scenes totaling 3,117 words which is just over 750 words. Yay for making my goals! It’s actually been less of a struggle than I thought it would be. :-)

  40. Elen Grey Says:

Okay. I signed-up Friday, so I’m reporting for two days, not including Sunday. My goal is 1,000 per day. I edited & revised 5600 words and wrote 283. This means I’m already behind. Ugh. Sven just cocked his left eyebrow. Yes, Sven, I will be making it up!

  41. Shawn Hansen Says:

I’m shooting for six-days-per-week at an average of 1,000 words-per-day, so if I am doing my math correctly, I should be hitting the 6,000 word mark today.

I’ll likely end right where I am now: 3,311 words.

While I am a bit behind, life has gotten a bit in the way this week, and the important goals—two contest submissions—are on target. One was sent as planned, and the other is about ready to head out the door.

I’ll give myself and everyone else here a YEAH TEAM for all our work!

  42. Marissa Says:

I’m up 2350 words. I’m doing pretty well keeping up. I want to meet the challenge this time so I have a book ready for my agent to propose come Feburary-ish.

    Woot!

Thanks sooooo much for the inspiration!

  43. Lynn Raye Harris Says:

6543 words this week! Woohoo! I beat my five day goal by 118 words. So far, pretty happy. :) Thanks for the kick in the pants. :)

  44. Jane (Maude Clare) Says:

Well, I did not check in Wed, which was a first for me, but this has been a long hard week with family and other work. It’s going slow. I am revising one book and writing a new one, and haven’t worked the kinks out of how to make all that work and post it, so I am behind. But I do plan on catching up. I am about 5000 words in the red, which means this week I’ve got to write. So today I am working on some character details and plot details in order to move on. But I hate to say, the last three days, I did not write on my fiction at all.

  45. Kris Yankee Says:

I’ve only missed writing one day and am happy to report that I’m writing at least the minimum each day. I need to ramp it up to at least 1200 to make my word count.

  46. Lynn Matherly Says:

I’m checking in, but haven’t added my word count for today. This is progress through Saturday… I’ve added 505 words since Wednesday. Not good. Although, it’s better than nothing. Life is busy around here, so I’m glad I managed that much. This next week should be better, though. My current total is 5588.

  47. Laura Armstrong Says:

    0 words
    Zip
    Nada

I’m suffering from s “shouldy” attitude. I’ve got so many things I should do (lose weight; plan Thanksgiving– here or there, and who’s coming this year?—oh, Halloween’s coming up, so costumes for the kids; band concert Wednesday; pants need hemming; the project at work needs to slide into phase 2 or I’ll slide out of a job; I’m spending $$ a month on a gym membership I never use; my dad needs his bathroom painted; and there’s the hall baseboards to reinstall from when we replaced the floor 3 months ago…). I don’t want to do any of them.

And that suddenly includes writing. It’s gone from my secret joy, the thing I sneak around to get away with, to something I should do. Death knell to creativity for me. The characters are thrashing around in my head, keeping me abreast of what’s happening in their lives, but I can’t get myself to slap all that down somewhere.

Somebody please tell me quickly that I definitely SHOULD NOT BE WRITING so I can get back to it!

  48. Lauren Dane Says:

Thanks to a hugely staggering record day last week and really wonderful days the rest, I’m at 24.5K words so far. I just started a new book so the beginning is always the hardest time (the last book in a series) but the plotting is going well and I’m thrilled with my progress so far.

It’s a good thing for me to work in dribs and drabs during the day around my kids and then sit down and work balls out at night.

  49. Lia Says:

I haven’t written yet today–I’ve got a cold and still feel a bit hazy. I do plan to write 1,000 words. Not counting that, I’ve written 5,179 words. It’s a nice start, and I feel pleased by the way my story is shaping up.

  50. Annie O Says:

Just churning away! Have 45 pages total going into the second week. That’s ten more that I had scheduled to be completed this week. Loving this! Thanks, Anna Adams for recommending this!

    annie o

  51. Joely Says:

2592 more words since last check-in for a Sven total of 10,119 words (including 1006 today). I’m switching over to worldbuilding/plotting for my NaNo project for the rest of the day/week, but I’ll still shoot to get my 1K a day.

  52. Peggy Dallmann Says:

I signed up for the challenge on Monday, the 15th, but had a lot going that day and didn’t get much done. Then, I awoke with one of my awful migraines on Tuesday, and it put me out of commission for two days. I didn’t even check in on Wednesday. I didn’t have anything accomplished, and besides, it was killing my eyes and making me sick to look at the computer. BUT, I have made some progress since Wednesday. I decided which idea I would work on, one for which I had written a one-page synopsis several months ago but that my critique partner liked. After I posted here on Friday, I used the suggestion to write 15 minutes every morning before I do anything else, and another suggestion to leave the document open so that it is sitting here on my computer, waiting and calling to me. The tips worked, because I wrote 1,006 words between yesterday and today. It is well below the goal, but I am not counting these early days as actual writing days. Still, it helped to put my writing first in the day, and I actually spent a lot more than 15 minutes working on it these past two mornings before I did anything else. I figure it will take me another week or so to plan some of my novel ahead, such as developing the main characters more fully so that I can begin envisioning them and making them part of my life. It is always slow going for me at the beginning, but this challenge has made me speed the process up somewhat. So I am happy thus far, especially since I was doing NO writing before the challenge (and had not done any substantial writing since mid-summer). And I love waking up, knowing that the first thing I will be doing is sitting at my computer to write. And, since I’ve been trying to catch up with everything since my migraine earlier this week, I probably would not have gotten around to working on my novel at all if I put it off until later in the day. That has been my problem too much of the time in the past. So, this time around I am getting very pumped!! I am hoping that I can devote my entire mornings to my novel–planning, writing, etc.–during the upcoming weekdays.

  53. Emma Petersen Says:

Le sigh. My goal when I started was about 750 per day because I know it’s a goal I can keep. I haven’t kept record as well as I could but from the info I was able to gather I’m averaging about 915 per day.

I’m keeping much better records this week and hope to have a better report in next Sunday. :D

  54. Shannon Stacey Says:

Eh. I only got 51% of my 7k goal. I tend to write a lot during primetime with my laptop, but the new fall shows and my Red Sox in the ALCS are derailing me. I intend to learn how to block morning hours out starting tomorrow, so hopefully next week will be better. :(

  55. PortiaDaCosta Says:

Hey, I just got back from the pub… and did another 100 words! Now there’s commitment… :)

  56. Renee Lynn Scott Says:

I’ve written 3,171 since we started on Monday on one project and revised a chapter on another. I have no idea how many new words I’ve written on it.
    I also haven’t written today.

One day at a time, right?

  57. Lynn Says:

I’m working, just don’t know the word count at the moment. Finally finished editing, so now I can move on.

  58. Melani Blazer Says:

I’m at 3,366 in “countable” words–but I have about 7 journal pages I haven’t keyed in. Getting to actually sit at my computer and type has been (nothing new) the most difficult challenge. But I’ve carried this journal with me and have made progress when I wouldn’t have otherwise done so.

Way to go for all those kicking butt and keeping Sven’s evil wrath at bay :)
Cheers and encouragement who fell short of the goal… there’s still alot of time! ;)

  59. Melissa Blue Says:

I did pretty good this week. I revised the first 9 chapters of my book and met my daily word goal everyday. I chose to do 750 a day and went over most days. For the sweat I now have 7,056 added to my WIP which is now 12,921. If I can keep doing 750 a day I can be done by New Year’s.

    Good job other sweat-ers.

  60. Seanachi Says:

Weekly goal was 7500, daily goal 1,000 plus a little bit to make up. I made it in right over the line with 7593 and finally seem to have found a rhythm and am starting to really get a feel for these characters, so woo hoo!

  61. Ella Drake Says:

I had been doing OK until I hit a wall. A wall that I had to face. I really needed to finish my research so I could close the holes in my world-building. I struggled with some decisions that I’ve put off for quite a while. But I did it! I buckled down and fleshed out everything. From this point forward it should just be write, write, write.

  62. Emily Ryan-Davis Says:

Ok, I caught up Saturday’s words. That’s 6 x 750ish words this week for…is it really possible that’s 4500 words for the week? They add up so innocuously this way!

  63. Kimberly Claire Says:

I met my 750 word goal on Thursday, but Friday was a total wash. I made up for it yesterday though by writing 1,600 words. So far today, I’ve only managed about 400 thanks to a visit from the in-laws. Still, I feel good about keeping up with my word counts, so I count it as progress. Have to make it up tomorrow though.

  64. Louisa Says:

    Laura–

Like you, I need my writing to be a secret joy. To that end, I have told no one in my real life that I’m writing. As far as they know, I’m playing solitaire all night. It really is more of a pleasure when you have to sneak around to do it. Don’t know what kind of perversion that indicates. But, whatever works, right?

I’m thinking if I make my nails even shorter, and take a couple of doses of aspirins a day, I’ll be able to get more words out each day. I truly hate typing.

  65. Carly Phillips Says:

Oops forgot I include Sunday in the count - 5458
    780 avg daily
Again below what I want but better than before today, LOL.

  66. Sophisticated Writer Says:

So far I’ve written a total of 1200 words, but that’s actually something for me, given the fact that I’m so busy with work and still revising my last novel. OK, no excuses…

I’m still exploring the plot and my characters (and I’ve never written women’s fiction before) which is why I haven’t written much. However, I shall write more next week. Cheers all!

    Boy, I love this challenge.

  67. Bianca D'Arc Says:

I wrote about 11,000 words last week but got hit with edits on Friday so next week I probably won’t be able to add to that overall wordcount, though I’ll definitely be sweating! LOL

  68. Autumn Says:

I have had a rough week in terms of writing. It’s not coming for me at the moment, and some days I only get a couple of paragraphs written. My total word count for week one is 1,849. I’m not giving up! I know there is plenty of time to catch up. Once the story works out some of its kinks, I know the words will come much more easily.

  69. Sophisticated Writer Says:

Who else is writing women’s fiction for this round of SDoS? Please stop by my blog and say hi :)

  70. Sherry Says:

I’m still working on revisions and now I’m battling computer issues. Installed new virus protection, and now I can’t even find the button to log into my own blog — which, of course, means I can’t blog about what I’m doing! I’m so frustrated. Grrrrr. Anyway, I’m revising away, not adding to my total page count yet, but at least getting the story to fall into line so I can move on soon.

  71. Taylor Says:

I haven’t written yet today, too much mom stuff on the go. I didn’t wriet thursday either, migraine.

Between friday and yesterday I managed 967, bringing me to a total of 3703, which I’m happy with, I guess. If I’d done 750 a day mon-fri I’d have been at 3750 sonI’m content to live with it.

  72. Taylor Says:

    I didn’t write either…lol

  73. Shiloh Says:

Can’t remember exact word count… we went out of town for a few days, but I do know I got about 3000-3500 done.

Almost done with this book so I can start on my main Sven project.

    :-)

  74. Dixiebelle Says:

I finished up Chapter 2 yesterday to complete the week and I have started Chapter 3 today. I didn’t make as much progress as I would have liked but I’ve got a cold and had to do errands today. However, I plan to do some outlining tonight.

  75. Rana Swan Says:

7000 words all up and well into chapter 3 of my first novella - Swept Away - Damn if only all Pirates were this hot lol.

  76. Krista Says:

I managed to write 5,026 words this week. I know I could have rounded this down to 5K, but those 26 words count! LOL

  77. Nicole Gestalt Says:

I’ve been trying to hit 1000 words a day and so far have managed it. I’ve not hit it one or two days but then have been able to make it up on the next days. So for this first week of the challenge I’m on 7943 words. I’m very happy about it and I can almost see the end of my big piece that has a deadline looming very close which is great!

Now I just have to keep this up.

  78. Jodie Wilkerson Says:

2312 new words since Wed. and 30 pages of major, massive revisions (basically rewritten). The word count looks low but the revisions are major and have covered 3 chapters. Better than I ever would have done without this challenge hanging over me!

  79. Susan B. Says:

Still savin’ it up for Nano, but working away at my notes and making progress. I can just feel that word count building up. (That’s what I’m telling myself.) Can I just say that I’m really proud of my critique partner, Seanachi, who’s working really hard around all kinds of time constraints to make her goal every day? She always gives me “no excuses just write” inspiration. Of course, she’s got it easy right now. Just wait until November when she’s buried under the piles of words I’ll be sending her way.

  80. Melanie Anderson Says:

6,000 new words this week. If I think about the fact I only had like 2 pages done on this WIP before the challenge, that’s excellent. Yesterday I was taking a shower when suddenly all the backstory for my hero and heroine came to me. I love shower breakthroughs! Wait… that sounded weird.

Anyway, after the shower, I typed it all up, then started writing more. I did slack off a bit Thursday (Grey’s Anatomy!) and Friday (watched Transformers with my husband and son), but wrote 2,000 words yesterday.

Now I’m about to turn close this window and see how many words I can write now. I love this challenge!

  81. Wayne (aka Trybble) Says:

    Magic Touch:
    Total word count = 10,157
    New words written = 0

    Double O Blonde
    Total word count = 4,581
    New words written = 1,853

I’m happy to have exceeded my goal of 1,000 words per checkin. Including now writing a single word yesterday. But I did work out a scene while I watched my son’s marching band take second place at the Band Masters tourniment yesterday.

But some of y’all are simply amazing. I can’t believe how many words you’ve managed to write in such a short time.

    Take care…………..Wayne

  82. Candice Gilmer Says:

I have hit about 8K this past week, maybe 9K… (it’s Sunday night, and I’m tired — not sure exactly where I’m at… lol) But I’m still going strong. :)

  83. Michael Woodhead Says:

    1865

  84. Sara Says:

2675 words. Okay but I think I can do a lot better.

  85. Annie Says:

this was very slow week for me and writing. I wrote 1,845 words. I hope do better next week!

  86. TFW Says:

I have around 2,700 words for my week’s count. I am happy with my progress because I was able to write even today when I am on bsiness travel. Instead of lazing on the plane and reading or listening to my iPod, I made myself write first then do those other things.

Eeking out time over the next couple of days os going to be tricky because I’m scheduled to be in meetings or forced socialization from 7am until 10pm each day. But I’ll check in again.

  87. Taige Crenshaw Says:

Count is 18,399. A great start. I’m happy.

  88. Rebecca Airies Says:

Since Wednesday, I’ve managed to write 5894 words, bringing my sweat total up to 9838 words. :) So far it’s been great. I’m almost finished with Primal Encounter and have gotten to work on another unfinished WIP Guarded Beginnings. On average, I’ve more than met my 1250 per day goal so far. Not finished with today’s writing, but I’ll make today’s goal.

  89. Pamela Bolton-Holifield Says:

Off to a slow start, darn it! I have 2816 for the week. I WILL keep plugging away though!

  90. Jeanne Says:

Averaged 750 words per day for 5 writing days and took two days off. It’s more than I would’ve written without the challenge so I’m happy.

  91. Dawn Says:

I’ve been slacking the last few days so I’m still 600 words + short of my target. The total came to 7546 for the week though, which is more than I’ve ever written in a week. Will buck up for second week.

  92. D M Evans Says:

did a lot of revising of old stuff, got some new stuff for about 3571 words this weekend, taking me somewhere between 8-9K not bad.

then two new characters introduced themselves to me for nano which were utterly unplanned but they’re very loud

  93. Lori Saltis Says:

A big dust storm blew through here last night and I spent the better part of the day cleaning up after it. No new word count for today — yet! The night is still young, but I am not, so we shall see. ;)

For the week, my word count is 8845. Not up to my goal of 1500 words a day, but nonetheless I’m very pleased.

I love reading everyone’s comments. I can relate to so much of what’s being said, as I’m sure we all can. All this motivation is really great.

  94. Carrie Lofty Says:

Slow couple of days as I finished up a workshop submission. Th-Sun = 1900 words. 5770 total.

  95. catie Says:

    275 words today

    1,128 words total

    I feel like crying…*sigh*

  96. Karen Erickson Says:

Well I disappointed myself but oh well. This week I only got in about 2k. But I went out of town and my son had to go to the ER Friday night so does that count as a good enough excuse? LOL

I plan on kicking major butt this week. Sweatin’ hard with Sven! :)

  97. Patrice Michelle Says:

7600 words since Wednesday. So that makes almost 10K for the week. Not too bad, but I really wanted to finish this partial and write a synopsis for it before I went back to my current WIP. :)

  98. Michelle (MG) Says:

It’s still the 21st my time (10:13pm Pacific) so I’m checking in! LOL I’ve got a total of 5261 since we started (2989 since Wed). That’s an average of about 750 per day since the beginning and that works for me! :-D

  99. Joy Renee Says:

I put all my efforts this week into planning the novel I’m going to work on for NaNoWriMo–a brand new story world, a love story called Spring Fever.

I expect this second week will be similar. I have to resist writing draft material to keep this eligible for NaNo. But I’m hoping I can get Spring Fever prepped for NaNo ASAP so I can return to writing scenes in the story world I worked on for round one of Sweat. I haven’t taken this much time off of it since July 8.

  100. Katherine Says:

I have 5200 typed up and what I approximate at about 1950 that I have yet to type (damn me and my inability to just sit and write at the computer, it would make this go much faster). So I guess I’m at around 7150 so far. Just over 10% of what I suspect my word count will be for the final draft.

  101. Marilyn Brant Says:

I’ve written 2,500 more words since Wednesday’s check-in (a total of 5,750 since we started), but I’m going between two projects. This is both good and not-so-good: I’m not moving as fast on the new novel as I’d hoped, but I’m also not getting stuck on one thing and feeling unable to move forward. So, I guess I’ll take the flexibility, even if that means it’ll take me longer to finish the novel I’d planned to draft…

  102. bettie Says:

I’m editing and rearranging. I did fifty pages since last check in, and all of my cutting has driven my word count into the negative numbers. ::sigh::

  103. Amanda Freeman Says:

Still working on researching and plotting for NaNo. Will start revising story later this week.

  104. Maggie Says:

Okay, not doing as well as I would like to, but still making progress.

Since Wednesday check in I have written 747 words for a total for a weeks work standing at 1557 words.

Better than nothing, but I know I can do better!

If someone can send me some energy that would be great about now!

Alrighty then…Sven says sweat, so I WILL SWEAT!

  105. JP Shaw Says:

Mmmm not sure how I’m doing. Sick with the flu right now, so I took Saturday off, and I’m late checking in. I did two rewrites, then scrapped the three chapters I wrote, and moved on to chapter one of my book and wrote 2, 132 words sunday. Total since started on my two WIP = 15, 027 words. But I’m writing everyday, which is the biggest difference for me from before.

I have never done that before, so thanks SVEN for making me sweat. You can also check out chapter one of my story either on my blog or here http://www.bebo.com/Profile.jsp?MemberId=4891335901. Feedback and comments on what you think would be great.

It’s great to see everyone trying, even if things don’t always work out as we wish, it’s trying and doing that make the difference, so sweat sweat sweat, everyone, and chins up!!!

  106. Tess Harrison Says:

I didn’t check in yesterday, so I’m doing so first thing this morning.

Total since last check in - 1,532. Total word count - 2,628.

  107. Madelynne Ellis Says:

Just shy of 8K for the week, which isn’t bad since this is the start of a new project and I hate beginnings :-) It might have been more but I had some proofs arrive that have to be back ASAP. Don’t they always.

  108. Jordanne Says:

Sorry I didn’t get a chance to log in yesterday but I was working a 14 hour shift. Even still I wrote 1253 words yesterday (TG I can write at work), Saturday I logged in 1020 words and Friday 760, for a week one total of 5053. Yay me! And in also writing related I managed to revise/edit 4 chapters of my completed ms.

Thank you Sven and all the wonderful sponsers!

  109. deniz Says:

so far so good! 5387 words this week, and my first day off on Sunday!

  110. Dawn Montgomery Says:

I was at work yesterday or I would have commented. 10,804 for the week. Not too bad. Finished one of my six wips. So I’m a 1/6 of the way done!

  111. Alice Anderson Says:

Got 2k done of friday. Haven’t come up with a grand total yet, but I didn’t get anything written this weekend. *sigh* Did update the look of my blog a bit though. :)

  112. Barbara B. Says:

I was slow this week. I wrote 1,500 words, but it is more than I have written in more than a month. I spent the other time outlining my current WIP.

    BKB

  113. Jess Says:

I’m at 16k, started the challenge at 11k, so my 1k a day is on track. I can’t write on weekends/won’t/don’t because we’re closing in on my trip to Kenya and I’m simply too busy fundraising and planning and handling minutae. But I made that decision for myself, to only write on weekdays this time, so that I don’t drive myself crazy making up the last weekends that I knew would occur. SO, so far, so good.

  114. Jambrea Says:

I took the weekend off, but I have a little over 2,000 for Thursday and Friday. I’m averaging a little over 1,000 words a day! :)

  115. Charlene Teglia Says:

My thinking/plotting days dragged down my average, but that should pick up now that I’ve gotten around some issues. The writing days are all over my goal, so moving forward.

  116. Jaci Says:

I finished revisions on my 90K single title, adding almost 5K to it, then also worked on new book, adding about 3K to that, so 8K for the week and a complete book revision was great for me.

This week I’m turning in said revised book and heading full steam into new book, so I expect new word count to kick some serious butt now.

I think everyone’s doing great. And for those who had a slow start, don’t worry. It was just the first week. If it wasn’t stellar, you’ve got plenty of time to get rolling. Don’t give up! :-)

  117. P.S. Says:

Ugh. I’m averaging about 200 words a day. Multiple hospital trips (first preschooler’s and then my own) threw monkey wrenches into the past week, but I think we’re in the clear now. And I’m at least happy that my word count is growing, however slowly.

What concerns me is that, while I’m trying to write when I can, I find I’m honing less. Focused on trying to get my word count up, I’m not as careful with my word choice…I find that I’m slipping into more telling than showing…all my bad writing habits are rising to the surface.

Not sure what to do about that. It seems that I can either write faster or write thoughtfully…but not both. Grr.

  118. jenifer Says:

Okay, so I’ve been traveling this week and couldn’t even check in on Sunday, but I’ve done about 3000 words this first week. So, only about half of my goal, but still something. More to come, I’m confident of that.

  119. Melissa Schroeder Says:

I’m late, but I was in the air and on the road most of yesterday. I did get about 1800 words written while I was out at the Women’s Expo and I am finishing up the book today:)

  120. Emily Ryan-Davis Says:

P.S., spend an hour each day before you write new words and focus that hour on “showing” the words from the day before.

I’m finding the same issue - lots of words, not lots of thoughtful words, but now that I’m aware I’m doing it I’m trying to do it less.

  121. Caro Kinkead Says:

3109 words for the week, which doesn’t include the 1,500 words I wrote and dumped because they were from the wrong POV. Not great, but considering a few days got blown out because of work, I’m pretty happy.

  122. Lydia Says:

My handheld crashed last week, taking a lot of stuff with it. Not including that, I wrote 3,750.

  123. Elizabeth Says:

Just returned from a week long business trip, without internet access unless I wanted to pay their ridiculous charges (which I didn’t). For the first week, I have around 6000 words, some old, most new. Not bad considering this was work mostly done while on the road.

Hoping this week, at home, I can pick up the pace a bit more.

  124. P.S. Says:

Emily–Thanks for the suggestion! Making an hour a day to revise, much less write new stuff, is proving difficult. But it’s still a great suggestion!

  125. Aden Says:

Managed to throw myself a vacation day or two over the weekend to hang out with long-missed friends too infrequently seen. I’ve got around 2,100 so far this week and next week is looking good.

  126. Conda V. Douglas Says:

My first lesson: doesn’t matter how much a novel is screaming to be written, unless I write on that w.i.p. EVERY DAY, it’s time-consuming to get back into the flow.

  127. Anthony Owens Says:

I, along with Jambrea, took the weekend off. Bad move. Bad form. Watch out for Mr. Blue, right, Portia? Egads! I finished last week at nearly 9,000 words or so, so I’m hitting above my average even with the weekend off. I intend to get caught up over the next day or two, though.

    Write on!

    Rock n Roll!

  128. Jenna Wallace Says:

Posting late…not sure where yesterday went…oh wait, that’s right took the entire troop of Girl Scouts to the pumpkin patch–hayrides, face painting, petting zoo, pony rides. Wiped out. But then again, nothing really to post. Made my count of 1k through Wednesday and then being a mom got really busy. Book fair, pictures, Halloween, and Drug Free Week. AHHHHH. But this week will be much quieter and I am determined to have the words made up by this time next week. God help me. Or maybe I shoudl say Sven help me.

  129. Michelle Says:

Oops…I forgot to check in here yesterday. My bad! But for the week I managed roughly about 3000 words. I’m about 2000 short but plan to make it up this week. I started out really well and think I’m going to have to go back to my early morning writing sessions. That really seems to help more than the late night ones! Anyway. Glad to see everyone doing so well.

    Michelle

  130. Elle Murphy Says:

Eek! I’m sorry I’m behind checking in! I do have a good excuse, though, because I’ve been working my heinie off with my WIP and I got 10,000 words of worldbuilding and actual writing done in the last 2 days alone. It’s sort of like a puzzle right now :) But it’s coming together at last!

Otherwise, I’ve written a minimum of 750 words/day, even if what I write totally sucks.

  131. Misty Wright Says:

I’m late on chiming in. I’ve done around 50 pages so far. I’m polishing a book to send off. This is the first part of my challenge. :)

  132. Jen Says:

No word count yet, but this is intentional. I’m doing the “70 Days Round 2 & NaNoWrimo 2007″ at the same time thing. So last week and this week are planning weeks for me. On Nov. 1 the made writing dash begins.

(Ok, thanks to dental surgery last week, even the planning isn’t as far along as I’d like, but it’s closer. I’ll have it all nailed down by the 1st.)

  133. hot babes calendar Says:

Hola, i’ve been browsing around your site and it seem really really neat. I’m building a blog and struggling to make it look great. How hard was it to make your site? Could someone like me, a noob do that? I really wanna to make something like this. Just for your info your home page seem broken when I visiting using IE 6.
