A Surer Judgment

The piece of paper on which I have this quote saved was printed out 11/25/98. It’s from an email, and it’s folded into a 2″ x 6″ rectangle, the whole sheet is. I love this quote because even though Da Vinci is referring to his work, I believe wholeheartedly that we can apply the same to what we do. Once we finish a project, if we have time to set it away for awhile, we’re able to come back to it with a different eye, one that will see the things we’re too close to see while creating - the forest for the trees concept. Obviously, if we’re knocking up against deadlines, this isn’t going to happen, but if we’re able to build in time for the manuscript to sit and ripen, we can then go back and submit it to that surer judgment before submitting it to an editor.

That is a GREAT quote and it makes so much sense. I really do find myself doing that quite often. Sometime you just need to step back. I’m adding that to my ‘great quote list’. Thanks for sharing

I’m going to add this quote to my list too. I’m quite awed to realise that the great Leonardo actually felt the same way about his work that I do about mine. I’m a great believer in a period of ’setting’ if time permits. I often spot ways to improve and refine when I’ve got that bit of distance from a WIP.

*shiver* I’ve just been revisiting a book I haven’t looked at in a year. I made so many partial changes back then that it’s full of inconsistencies and disconnects. I have a new set of eyes to look at it now, but I feel guilty knowing what a mess I’ve handed over. /;+) That will be one of my backup projects during this challenge. Ideally, I’d like to whip it into shape for the Golden Heart. I’m going to have a shot at it anyway.

First, big thanks to Bettie for the tracker!
Secondly, I have personal experience with not getting enough time away from projects. Thanks so some time in the hospital this spring, I was behind on work, so I have do to push it. It showed, and my editor had to tell me TAKE A BREAK. I had misplaced modifiers, bad plot developments, the list could go on and on.
It is one of the reasons I signed up for this, so I could bust butt to get it done and get some time away from it before it is due in.

It is amazing how you push hard to get something done, breathe a sigh of relief that you made it, and are horrified three weeks later to see all the sloppiness that snuck in! Great quote, good motivation to settle down a bit—

That is a great quote and I’ve found it’s been very true when it comes to anything I’ve written, whether fiction, letters, memos, papers for school, etc. Taking that time away—if it can be taken—does help a lot. That’s why, if possible, I try to factor in some “stepping away” time for my projects once I’m done with them. Doesn’t always work out—last month I had no stepping away time before I had to submit my stories to make some deadlines—but I do try and take the opportunity to do so when I can. Can make all the difference in the world sometimes.
