Sunday Check In

It’s a beautiful, sunny morning where Sven is. The kids are out looking for Easter eggs, and Sven started off the day with two shots of wheatgrass, a pot of coffee, and a leisurely, 18-mile run.

How’s the writing going? Check in here.

I actually started out great, then fizzled a little bit, now I am back on track. I got back on track by going back to a book that needs to be revised that I had set aside for awhile after finishing it. Now I am into the thick of it again and rewrote a whole scene yesterday - long-hand. Unfortunately, I lost count on how many words I wrote, but I am guessing it’s probably in the 2000 range, probably more.

  2. Portia Da Costa Says:

I’ve done much better since Wednesday! Around 5.5K, with a towering 2.2K yesterday alone. :)

This is such a relief, as I haven’t done so well in the challenge so far. Need to kick back and do some editing today, but am still happy with my progress at the moment.

  3. Jen P Says:

Did you see yesterday’s inspirational post? Yep, that’s what it’s been for me these past few days, and likely a few more days. So my word count won’t be changing much. It’s still hovering around 11k.

May the Force be with you. :-)

  4. Kim Knox Says:

ooh, I can post before I have to run off to my mother’s for Sunday lunch.

I finished and subbed a book, Lost Gods, to Samhain on Tuesday and threw myself into another wip that has bugged me for a while, lol I’m about 5.5k up on that this week. I also got hit between the eyes by an idea and I’ve been playing about with that after I’ve completed my daily 1k quota.

    Sven total: 23 300.

  5. Amy Ruttan Says:

I didn’t write for three days. Totally vegged. I needed it.

I was stuck this week. I decided to storyboard ala Dr. House as Shelley Munro puts it. Attacking my plots and characters like a disease on a whiteboard.
I squeaked just over 10,000 this week.

My EDJ and kids just swamped me the later part of this week. I’m sitting at 30,000 with this current project. I haven’t figured out my total Sven word count … I’m too tired right now. LOL!!

    Happy Easter Everyone! :D

  6. Jaci Says:

I did a little over 10K this week, which isn’t too bad considering I’m also doing galleys for a book at the same time. So I’ll call it good.

    Happy Easter! :-)

  7. sandy l Says:

I’m doing much better this week. So far, I have around 16K words. I still hope to make up from the lost days of last week.

  8. Zoe Says:

I’m still getting my daily 2K; I’m up to 44K total. My discipline, though, seems to have gone out the window. I keep opening up internet windows when I’m supposed to be writing, so the writing is taking three times as long as it should. This week I’m trying to fix that. Today was a good start; I hope I can keep it up.

  9. Cynthia Says:

I’ve put in another 1000 words since Wednesday. I think I’m just about at a point now where I need a little bit of an outline, or at least I need to start at page one and start filling in all the details I left out. These 30 pages I’ve written to date have been more stream of conscience than anything, so I’ll be mulling over what to do next while I’m out and about during the day.

  10. Louisa Says:

Doing okay, could be better. Need to take this keyboard to the shop again. I go through so many keyboards! Still got close to 6K this week, which is okay considering the kids were out of school all week and DH had a three-day weekend. Hey, they needed some time off from their jobs, you know.

  11. Kathleen Says:

Normally I wait until the end of the day to check in, but I know perfectly well I will be tied up with family stuff today and won’t get a word written. Weekly goal wasn’t met. Only 5301/7000. I’ve got a ways to go before I catch up. Hopefully next well will go better.

  12. Karen Erickson Says:

Well I got incentive to wrap up my book so I worked like a crazy woman and busted out 22,262 words since Wednesday. I’m almost done with the book! But today I’m taking it easy and celebrating Easter at my house.

Hope everyone has a good one. :)

  13. Angelle Trieste Says:

    Done with Draft 4.

Am going to print it out and revise it again. :)

  14. Larissa Says:

I was sick this week, so didn’t do too great. 3,863 words. Cool thing, though, is that I finished the first act, and today I’ll start on the second! Yay!

  15. Lisa Hendrix Says:

    I’ve had a fine weekend.

As I noted in comments on Diana’s post, I got revision notes a few days ago. Well, I sat down and clicked through them, including deletions, rewrites, and one entirely new scene, in less than 48 hours. The new scene was over 11 pages (2100+ words), and I wrote it in a matter of hours — way faster than my usual pace, because I *knew* where I was going and why. (duh)

And best of all, the book’s better. Not just shorter. Not just different. BETTER. My editor, praise be heaped upon her, spotted the weaknesses I had sense but hadn’t been able to get my finger on and helped me figure out how to fix them. In six books, under three editors, I’ve never had one do this, not this way. I could kiss her. I probably will at National.

Now all that’s left on that book is to write the dedication and author notes. Then on to the new one, plate clear, brain free of the old characters, with lots and lots of momentum to carry me.

    Yep, a fine, fine weekend.

  16. Amie Stuart Says:

I got 1500 words since Wednesday. I’ve only got about another 1000 words to go on this proposal–and a synopsis :D

Then it’s back to the WIP which I think I’m going to have to print out and go over before i can get going again.

  17. Melissa Blue Says:

I haven’t been doing much last week, but I attempted to make progress this week. I’ve edited the last four chapters of See Megan Run. If I’m lucky I will have hit my intial word count goal of 50k.(This is the book I completed last Sweat.)

And on the WIP I’ve added a total of 1,693 words. My total word count is 12,180. I have such a long way to go and I’m trying not to give up. I just haven’t felt like writing lately.

  18. Marissa Scott Says:

It was a good week. I found the angle I needed for a chapter and ran with it and it’s flowing smoothly. I think the chapter will be done today or tomorrow and then I just have to send it to the CPs, edit it, and it’s off to my agent for her take. So, all in all, a good week considering all the hours worked on the day job. :-)

  19. Erin Kendall Says:

I’m up to 16,640 words so far for Sven. Actually typed this week, because the wrist has been holding up well.

I just started the last third of the book….the end is in sight.

    Happy Easter everyone!

    Cheers,
    EK

  20. Jerri Says:

Still keeping up with the challenge. Total since I started 24,349 words. I can’t believe how much this has helped to get my book written.

  21. Saskia Walker Says:

Not so good, alas. I’ve been sick so I’ve been crawling along. Still making progress, but only around 5K for the whole week. Hoping for a better week ahead.

    Good luck to everyone!

  22. sandy l Says:

This may or may not help. Laurie R. King just finished her first draft of her next novel. She has some very illuminating (but short) comments. Here’s the link: http://laurierking.com/wp.php/

  23. Dawn Montgomery Says:

I’m a little over 5K since Wednesday, so not so bad! I’ll be plodding away. This coming week is going to be pretty high since I have dual deadlines going. I hope everyone has a good Easter!

  24. mary beth Says:

I finished this morning at 3:30. I still have another round of revisions for setting and then edits, but that’s it. Woo Hoo!

  25. LA (Laura Armstrong) Says:

Spent the last week on my first bona fide research trip with family for Spring Break. Took lots of notes, gathered research materials, and took hundreds of pictures. My youngest son (9) walked around a park used in a scene and thoughtfully suggested, “I think they’d sit on this rock, Mom. That one over there would be too close to the parking lot, and they’re going to want some privacy if he’s going to ask her to marry him.” !!! A budding cinematographer, perhaps?

So not so much actual wordage, but lots of good stuff. Smells, sounds, wind in my hair— stuff you just can’t get off the Internet.

  26. LA (Laura Armstrong) Says:

PS, went to Easter Mass this a.m. and heard a good lesson from the Zimbabwean priest there, something to the effect of, “Do not let yourself be measured by the tragedies in your life, and do not measure yourself by your shortcomings. Measure yourself by your faith, love, and good things that you do.”

Thought I’d share. Especially about the shortcomings part— I think we dwell too harshly on those as writers and as women.

  27. Lynn Says:

Still trying to meet my goals, and coming up short. I’ll get it together.

  28. Sarai Says:

Getting there slowly on the second project up 3,000 words bringing it to 13, 551 for the total not bad. As far as the main project it is at 34,000 only up 2,000 since last week but at least I am moving forward.
Now back to butt in chair and hands on keyboard. Keep up the good work everyone!

  29. Trace Says:

Only managed to write for 2 days as have been really sick, but dead chuffed as wrote just over 2500 words :) Happy Easter everyone!

  30. Thomma Lyn Says:

Only a couple thousand words or so since Wednesday, and that was in the course of revising what I’d already written.

That’s okay, though. I’ve been working my tushie off storyboarding — I needed to hammer into greater coherence the the world-building aspects to my story. And I’m happy to say I’ve made great progress. As of today, I’m ready to apply my insights to new revisions, then I can push forward with the story and that word count will start rising again!

Today I’m sitting at 36,009 words.

  31. Debbie Mumford Says:

I got stopped on my WIP by the necessity to create a synopsis for a completed work. Finished that, so I spent the morning doing stream of consciousness writing about the WIP to get back into the mindset. No actual words to report, but some great new scenes suggested themselves! Woot!

  32. Trisha P Says:

Still just one word at a time. I’m not up to my goal but at least I’m writing.

    Happy Easter!

  33. Sandie Hudson Says:

This week has been a total wipe-out for me. Between ear infections, Easter and sorting out my web site, I have done nothing to editing my WIP’s. I’ve decided today I’ll spend getting my house into some kind of order and tomorrow I’ll be back at my computer working away happily.

Well that’s the plan. Will it work? Who knows. Good luck for the rest of the week everyone.

    Hugs
    Sandie

  34. Gwen Mitchell Says:

I have been logging too many ‘freak out’ hours about my very first novel-length submission. If re-writing counts, I’m somewhere in the thousands for the week. But nothing new to report. *sigh* However, I’m almost done, and I plan to get back on the Sweat track shortly.

Keep it up, ladies - you’re all an inspiration!

  35. Greta Says:

I’ve only added 1500 words since last Sunday, I’m upto 9500 now. I’m taking my time have fun. I was getting stressed there for a while, but Jaci’s post earlier in the week was just what I needed.

  36. Brandi Bradley Says:

Spent most of my week researching and character development.
    Not a lot to add.
    B.

  37. Maggie Nash Says:

1000 words since Wednesday on a rewrite of a previously pubbed story, so that is pretty good for me. Not up to my 500 words a day, but nonetheless not too bad. Now if I could only get the edj and the convention I am organising to give me some time off!

onwards and upwards from now on…

  38. Lori Says:

It was a gorgeous Easter day here in Santa Barbara. Between the holiday and having a friend come to visit, I had little chance to write. I managed to snatch some time in the early evening. Not a high word count since Wednesday but a little progress has been made, so it’s all good.

  39. Diana Pharaoh Francis Says:

I got closer to hitting my quota this week. I’ve got about 27K for the three weeks. 3K short of where I wanted to be. I’m hopeful by the end of March I’ll be at my quota again. Played some catchup this weekend, which helped.

  40. Shiloh Walker Says:

Forgive me, Sven, I did lousy this week.

but I’m not going to bed until I pound out 2k today.

  41. Jennette Says:

Sven is a tough taskmaster - and it’s working! I actually got my weekly goal accomplished before ten ’till midnight. If not for Sven, I would’ve stopped with the 300 words I got in before family/holiday duties descended. Thanks to Sven, I took up where I left off when they left, meeting my weekend-daily goal of 2k, 6k since Wednesday, 28k total.

  42. Joely Says:

I’m finally picking up some steam with steady 1000-1500 a day, which is right where I need to be. Total for Sven so far: 16,041, still a little behind but I have some momentum! Happy Easter, everyone!

  43. S.J.Bell Says:

Right off the rails this past week, I didn’t write enough words to fill a post-it. I’m stuck for some reason but I have all day Monday to try to get back on track.

  44. Kristine Says:

I’m not hitting the word goals, but I’m working every day. Finished a difficult scene a few days ago. Now I’m working through a shift in POV/time, which is essentially like a new beginning. Beginnings are hard for me.

Out of town for the next week–I don’t think I’ll be able to bank any words. I am hoping that April is more productive than March.

  45. B.L. Foxxe Says:

For the entire last week and so has been horrible as far as zilch progress. I don’t even know how many words I’m at!
    Gah!
In other words, I’ve been doing lousy as far as being able to write anything worthwhile. Finally shelved the one I’d torn into pieces and might get back to it. For now, just working on other projects and maybe averaging at least three pages a day on something I started recently.

    On the other hand…

Happy Easter and I hope to have better progress to report next check in on Weds.

  46. HelenKay Dimon » Blog Archive » Sunday Fun Says:

[…] you remember to visit Sven and check in at the Sweat Challenge…? Go do […]

  47. Maria Says:

Had a rather productive week. I finished the first round of self-edits for my novella and am just waiting for my CPs to get back to me before the second round. I missed my daily goal twice but I’m still 2k up from where I should be so I’m not, you know, going to flog myself, lol.

  48. Lauren Dane Says:

Okay so I may not have written a whole lot of NEW words this week but I’ve gotten a heck of a lot of writing work done in the last seven days.

I finished the revisions on Undercover and got them back to my editor
I reworked a manuscript and synopsis and got it to my agent for a pitch
I edited and finished up Sensual Magic and I’ll mail it to my editor tomorrow

NOW - I can work on my next book and get some new words written!

  49. Rachel C Says:

End of mouth at FAR is a nightmare so I only got to do two hours of writing. Managed 1,372 taking my Sven total to 13,862. But I did read five books, did three reviews and lost count of how many pre-edit checks on all the unedited reviews.
Hope everyone had a great weekend and the words flow this week.

  50. Jean T. Says:

I feel like I’m finally getting on track. I’ve done 1,200k since last update, 1k of that on Saturday because I had a friend there to help iron out some wrinkles. :)

  51. Patty L. Says:

I’m only checking in so that you know I’m still alive. I did terrible, I took the week off. I honestly didn’t mean to do it. I just let life get in the way, but I will do better this week. I promise.

  52. Cynthia Eden Says:

Sorry to check in late–all the pollen in the air is making my allergies crazy! (So, um, that’s my way of claiming a sick excuse!) I wrote 60 pages this week-chugging right along…

  53. Laya D. White Says:

Due to, well, all sort of things, last week was a complete. But it’s okay - I confessed my sins to the writing gods and I’m ready to start fresh today!

  54. Kate Scott Says:

well, it’s actually been a GREAT week for me! Sorry so late in the check-in; yesterday was QUITE busy. I was gone from 7am til 10pm and didn’t even open my computer. It felt like the world had ended.

But I was VERY good this week. Despite a momentary setback of losing a day’s work due to server issues (I think about 2,000 words altogether), I bounded back and finished editing to my chapter 7. I’m not sure how many words I’ve actually added as I’ve deleted so many, but it’s been going very well.

  55. deniz Says:

Pretty good week - about two paragraphs away from completing a brand new scene, then I have to edit it and I can finally post on the Chapters thread over on the Compuserve forum - got all my crits done today! :-)
