March 12 — Wednesday Check In

You might have been dealing with the time change, Spring Fever, or blizzards, but how did you deal with your word count? Time to ‘fess up!

Hmmm…I confess to taking a small break after having blazed through four others already. I can say that I’m working solely on Silkweaver’s Never Ending Journey which is in five pieces, and have added 3k. I’ve slowed down, true, but haven’t stopped writing a word count each day. :)

Hope all you others are doing better! If I add more in, I’ll report in before the day ends.

    ttfn

  2. Xidu Says:

Not great. Stinking cold makes it hard to focus for longer than 15 minutes at a time but I think I’ve added about 3-4k. Head too fuzzy to be more exact.

  3. Diane J Standiford Says:

Neither cold nor rain nor snow can stop me, baby! 1,136 words Tues. for grand total of 13,327! Woo Hoo, I find that my IPOD provides interesting directions of the emotions of my characters. For me, this is a lot of typing—the story is all in my head, just waiting on my finger. My blog has dail updates:http://dj-astellarlife.blogspot.com/

  4. Portia Da Costa Says:

I was back on track on Monday with a cool 1.6k total for the day, then everything when belly up yesterday when my editor said could he have my current book in three weeks early!!! So, mega panic checking facts I thought I had three weeks to check, and rewriting various bits and pieces. As I probably took out as much as I put in, there probably aren’t any words to add to my total for yesterday.

So far, I’ve not being doing brilliantly on this challenge, but hopefully when I turn this book in I’ll be able to regain my forward momentum with new writing!

  5. Thomma Lyn Says:

Grand total of 21,090 words for the challenge so far — I’m happy! :)

  6. Kim Knox Says:

The end is in sight for this particular wip, so I hope to get it finished this week. Yay I’ve written 11.5k in total for Sven…9.5k of that since last Thursday, lol

And since I’m in NW England I have the mad weather today ;-)

  7. Maggie Nash Says:

Not having much luck so far…a bit of a false start due to family issues, however I intend to get a lot done tonight. I am aiming low. 500 words a day. Hopefully I’ll make it :-)

  8. Portia Da Costa Says:

Way to go, Kim! Stay safe in the mad weather… it’s pretty wild here in Yorkshire too, but we’ve probably not seen the worst of it yet.

  9. Nicole Reising Says:

I’m doing good - I didn’t think I’d be able to say that today as I’m in need of some editing, but in the end I had a scene I wanted to get rough drafted out and decided to write it first, Thus I’m actually over where I need to be as of today(12,000 words for Sven) bringing my ms count to 37,000. Now though I’m going to spend the rest of the day rewriting things to my liking. ;-)

    Have fun writing everyone!
    Cole

  10. Maria Says:

Since the last check in my pace has slowed a bit. I’m still hitting my daily goal of 1500 but I’m not getting much more than that. I’m sitting at 19k right now which is 1k over where I should be so I suppose I’m doing well overall. Still… Here’s hoping my pace picks up today!

  11. Christine d'Abo Says:

Well I’ve been moving on slow and steady. I’m just over 3k for the week so far, and that’s with not being able to write on the weekend. I’m going to keep pushing forward because I think I’ve finally hit my stride with this story. :)

  12. Laura Says:

Total so far - 2700 words.

*groan* I’m never going to catch up.

  13. S.J.Bell Says:

Well I’ve managed my 12000 wds, although some of these words aren’t too settled. I’m wondering if chapter 6 should become chapter 7 and if part of chapter 4 should be moved to chapter 3, etc. So lots of work ahead. And then I procrastinated for hours yesterday by trolling the Internet for information on the Alpha Smart because I’ve decided to buy myself one as a present for finishing this first draft which of course I’m not finishing because I am procrastinating.

  14. Bianca D'Arc Says:

Did great the first week with about 16,000 words total, but I got hit with edits over the weekend and haven’t written anything new since. They’re light, so I should be able to get them done today or tomorrow and then get back to writing. Wish me luck! :)

  15. Diana Says:

17,500 since the start of challenge.

  16. deniz Says:

Doing good… gotta finish Chapter 16 today and then choose another chapter to edit/rewrite the heck out of! :-)

  17. Jaci Says:

6000 words since Monday, 18,000 since the start of the challenge.

I’m doing fine but still want to push myself harder. Need to finish the book asap because I have to start another right away.

And Laura, don’t worry about catching up. Only work forward. If you didn’t start strong, don’t worry. Just think ahead and pick up your pace where you can. You’ll do fine. :-)

  18. Mechele Armstrong Says:

5000 words since Monday, bringing my total up to 16500. The youngest is home sick today but I met my goal for the day (1000) and if she lets me get more in, I’ll be surprised. A little bummed because I’ve been writing 2k a day for the past few days. The story is really flowing.

    I’m off to play nurse.

  19. Melissa Blue Says:

So far this week I’ve added 2,698 words to my ms. My total word count is 10,487 leaving me with 69,513 more words to write.

  20. Kim Knox Says:

Thanks, Portia. The winds are still fairly strong but at least it’s sunny. Which is nice, as I have to head off to pick my 6yo up from school soon.
All the rain is probably falling on Manchester…as usual, hehe

  21. Cynthia Says:

Slow and steady I’ve written about 1,000 words since last check-in. I didn’t write yesterday but I’ll be diving in this afternoon once I get some other work cleared off the desk.

  22. Larissa Says:

    I got a whopping 931 words this week! *g* I’m doing some catch-up today!

  23. Portia Da Costa Says:

Kim, the winds are mad here now, completely insane. My recycling box for cans and bottles has completely disappeared off the face of the Earth and is now in orbit!!!

  24. Patty L. Says:

I have only written 2806 words. :( I took Monday night off (time change kicked my butt) and last night I worked on critiquing for my CP. So I wasn’t totally blowing off writing. I will do better. I love the way my wip is going and my characters just won’t leave me alone. I love when that happens.

  25. Paula Robinson Says:

Hey everybody…I finally narrowed down which story idea I was going to use and have typed 7 pages…hopefully, I can keep this up…I know I have a lot of catching up to do…talk to you all Sunday…

    Peace and love,
    Paula R.

  26. Jess Says:

    4000 not counting outlining/synopses words. :)

  27. Jess Says:

Oh, that is both total and this week LOL

  28. Diana Pharaoh Francis Says:

I got off track this week and am behind my quota. Only did 2200 words in the past two days. Today I shall start making up ground. I hope. Been sick with one of those colds that make you stupid and then too, distracted by some good news that, while good, is, well, distracting. Back to work now.

*waves at everyone else* Keep rocking!

    Di

  29. Ember Says:

I’m just over 8000 words (as of 5 minutes ago ;) ). 1000 off the pace of where I wanted to be so -5 minute break is over, and back to writing I go!

  30. Amy Ruttan Says:

So I started my second book and I’m at 10,000 words since starting on Sunday. So to date taking in my last word count I’ve written 49,000 words for Sven.

I’ve adopted Daft Punks song Harder Better Faster Stronger, Hour after our work is never over as my current mantra. LOL!! ;)

  31. Lonnie Says:

I’ve written 30,500 words and feel like a writer has taken over my mind and my typing fingers. It is outta control in the most wonderful way. I’m more than double where I should be with regard to word count.

    Back to the grind!

  32. Diane J Standiford Says:

You guys are all doing great! Isn’t it great to hit the “zone?” :-)

  33. Trace Says:

I’ve managed 10 643 words for Sven so far. The last few days have been really tortuous but I’m hanging in there!

Amy & Lonnie, I am sooo jealous! WTG girls!! :)

  34. Jerri Says:

I’m writing every day again. Since I’ve started sweating I’ve written 12,604 words.

    Jerri

  35. Nayad Monroe Says:

I’m up to 11,900 as of yesterday, when I finished one of my stories, and today I’m developing the idea for my next story, which I will start to write tomorrow.

  36. Jen P Says:

Aaaah… This week has been good to me. I dove head-first into a brand new “Lord of the Rings meets Jason Bourne” type story. Amazingly fun to write.

So my word count is up to 9150 for the challenge. As soon as spring break starts…

  37. Gwen Mitchell Says:

Wow Thomma Lyn!!! And to anyone over the 10K marker - kudos! Others - don’t worry, you’ll get there. Just keep sweatin’!

I’m at 23.5K for the challenge so far, but I’ve done 2 read-through/edits on an 18K novella I’m getting ready to send out. So, I’m happy with my progress too.

    Good job everybody!

  38. Alexa Silver Says:

Co-wrote 35,041 total words, so my share is rougly 17,500. I’m incredibly pleased!

  39. Kristi Says:

just passed the 12,100 mark! Yay!!!

  40. Shiloh Walker Says:

I think about 6k-7k this week. Scattered week. Trying to get ready for RT and wondering what in the world I was thinking…. :-O

  41. Terra Kent Says:

I managed a total of 28 words so far this week because of being sick, doc appointments

  42. Tuesday Morrigan Says:

So far I’ve written ~20,000 words for Sven, 5,000 of those words were from Sunday. I’m a little behind where I would like to be because of edits. I’m hoping to catch up tonight and the rest of the week. I haven’t written today’s words for the day so :D. I think I’m doing pretty good, but I need to finish a contracted novella before I can focus on my 90k anthology.

  43. Erin Kendall Says:

8,880 words for Sven so far. Haven’t done my writing for today, so hopefully I’ll get at least another 1k in.

    Cheers,
    EK

  44. Sandy l Says:

I average about 900 words a day. Not as good as I hoped, but not bad. I can’t recall my page count to date, something like 9,000. And I haven’t written yet today.

  45. Sara Dennis Says:

I’ve gotten nearly 6,000 words done with Sven, thus far. I’m not where I “ought” to be, but forward progress is forward progress, so I’m not beating myself up. And! I’ve managed to hit quota + a few every day for the last three. Woo hoo!

    We can do it!

  46. Michelle Hasker Says:

I hang my head in shame.
I had three edits that I did the past week and a half, plus my volunteer work so I’m really sad to say I have only added a paragraph….

Will Sven come spank me now?

    :)

  47. Gina Marina Says:

OMG forgot it was Wednesday! nothing to report & two test next week so maybe next Wed?…..

  48. Lori Says:

Things are moving at a good pace, considering this is a major rewrite, particularly the next few chapters. I’m also working on my website as part of a web design class at the local city college. Progress is good on both fronts and I’m feeling pretty confident.

  49. Greta Says:

Okay, I would like to hear from someone who has a 40 plus hour a week job and trying to write. Especially after extremely hard days at work. The only days where I could more than 300 words were the four snows days. Other than that I’m lucky at 300 words a day. Since the start 6400 words. Just remember this is my first time doing this.

  50. Rachel C Says:

Not sure or the word count, I’ve been writing long hand and haven’t put it in the computer yet. There’s enough pages to keep me happy.
    Hope everyone is doing well.

  51. Brandi Bradley Says:

    Greta,
I am in the same boat. I work 40 plus hours a week, and the only time I can write is on my lunch breaks and then after I get home from work. I think about my characters all day. When I can’t get to my laptop, I will scratch down sketches on any piece of paper that I can. It is very awkward to do that while driving. If I have a hard day working, I try to make it up on the weekends.
I am up to 12,000 words and I am very happy with the way it is going. Of course I am still in the honeymoon stage with my characters so even their flaws are adorable. Its when the word count gets up that it gets complicated.

  52. Jen P Says:

Hey Greta, you’re doing fine… don’t worry much about the word count. The most important part of the challenge is just the consistency of writing every day.

    Good luck! :-)

  53. Nicole Gestalt Says:

Well this week I knew I’d be busy so haven’t been berating myself too much which is a good thing because I’ve only hit target once so far.

For the week so far I’m at 1,400 words. It’s not going to be much more then that by Sunday either I don’t think since till then is the performances I’m helping with so… I’ll just mark this down as my downtime :)

  54. Kathleen Says:

3223/7000 for the week with 4 days to go. Right on target. I’ve wound up basically inserting several days of scenes between what I had written, so that it delays the get together of the hero and heroine (which ALWAYS tends to get written too soon for me because I’m a sap and I’m in a hurry! Sometimes I wonder if I should start at the end with the HEA and write backwards). That’s taking a bit longer than I expected, but I’m not having to make too many changes–mostly additions. And I’m totally cool with that.

  55. Erin Kendall Says:

    Broke 10k for Sven! I’m a happy!

    Cheers,
    EK

  56. Jennette Says:

2k since Monday, for a total of just over 14k - right on target! Thanks for the kick in the rear, Sven!

  57. Darillian (J. Carter) Says:

I feel I did pretty well since Sunday. On Tuesday I was stuck trying to get myself to write the “planned” scenes and just couldn’t get the excitement up to do it. This made me realize that is the writer is not excited about writing a scene, how can they expect the reader to be excited reading it? So, I thought and found a way to end the chapter that was absolutetly, perfectly, beautiful. And it was only 30 words. But, they were the *right* words.

And 30 of the right words is better than thousands of the wrong ones. So for Tuesday, word count was not up, but word quality was.

And I almost made up for it the other two days, anyway.
Total for Monday, Tuesday, and Today = 2235
    Total since I started = 5768

Feeling pretty good. I’m getting somewhere.

  58. Ella Drake Says:

Just finished my current WIP. Putting in a 5,876 for the week, 12,911 total for Sven. Woohoo!
Off to the next project. Happy dance!

  59. Leah Says:

This week has something going on every day and every night, and it doesn’t help that I have not yet learned to write much when my kids are running around, asking for my attention every few minutes…or seconds! I realized that in the fall, I will have 2 hours, 3 days a week without a child, and that I can make at least one of those days longer–so I am kinda looking forward to that! But I finally finished chapter 5–it was brutal, but it’s done. Hopefully I’ll have a word count worth posting on Sunday! Kudos and best wished to all!

  60. Joely Says:

No new words, but I edited 120 pages. I have another 200 to go before the weekend…

  61. B.L. Foxxe Says:

Grrr, busted out 3k or so, and realized I need to regroup and check to avoid continuity errors. I’m blocked on the latest Silkweaver’s so I’m going to let it rest.

Oh well, I’ve got a short story I’m working on, one of three or four, right now its just over 6k, I’m aiming for at least 10k, and its running hot. So yay me. If it goes over 10k even better! lol.

For all those who’re hitting snags, feeling like you’re not going to catch up? Relax, eventually the WIP starts to gell to the point the characters won’t stop yammering until your head is ringing…

For those who’ve been dealing with full work schedules, don’t stress on the word count or lack of progress. Its natural to want to finish the project, but don’t do it at the expense of your health…not worth that much hassle.

*blinks and winces, stepping off soapbox* *Scrams*

  62. Kristine Says:

Missed Sunday’s check-in. Just cut 500 words, which constituted about half my production so far. Part of me just wants to sleep until the end of March.

Hoping for better things this weekend.

  63. Heather Harper Says:

Writing longhand. Too lazy to count. ;-)

  64. Kerry Allen Says:

Two young houseguests for two weeks are a good distraction. Still sitting around 4000 on this current project.

  65. bettie Says:

1894 words since Sunday, and I love each and every one of them!

  66. Larissa Says:

Wow — you guys are really doing great! You’re inspiring me to put out a little more effort! *g*

  67. Lillian Feisty Says:

So far this week I have a total of nearly 5000 words. My goal is to add 2K more today.

  68. Lynn Says:

Ack! I suck. Forgot about check-in yesterday and I’m just under 2000 for a total. I suppose the good thing is, I’ve finished two short stories and am working on another. At least something is getting done.

  69. Laya D. White Says:

I’m mostly playing catch-up, but I’m pleased with where I am - 7416 words. Most of that is character exploration and a little world building, which I’ve learned is necessary for me to actually write my scenes. Also, I got an idea that may turn this into three books instead of just one, but I’m tabling it to focus on getting one done first.

  70. Renee Sweet Says:

Fight scene’s tripping me up a bit. 8111. I’ll be through it tomorrow, come hell or high water!!!

  71. Lauren Dane Says:

I finally finished Sensual Magic, YAY!! Now it’s revisions for my December release then back to my May 15 deadline book. I’m chugging along and trying not to cough.

  72. 70 Days of Sweat » Blog Archive » Don’t Worry Says:

[…] was skimming the comments from Wednesday’s check and something Jaci said caught my eye. And Laura, don’t worry about catching up. Only work forward. If you didn’t start strong, […]
